Well, certainly. Any system will improve with these things. And I do believe a Sharepoint expert can make the s/w do quite exceptional things. That doesn't necessarily mean it is the right s/w for the job, though.

For example, I believe SharePoint "social" features are quite limited. This is a basic problem with the core design of the product. You can do customizations to overcome some of these limitations, but the more you customize, the more fragile the system usually becomes.

On the other hand, I am not sure larger corporations actually need (or know how to use) social media -- it tends to run counter to western corporate culture and often falls into disuse. In these cases, SharePoint may be a very strong contender, since it is well-designed to support top-down hierarchical management.

I know it sounds inordinately obvious, but if you start with the planning, then move on to the design, then technology selection, ending with the customization, training, and support -- you are most likely to end up with a successful system. The trick is doing the technology selection only once you know what problem you are trying to solve and truly assessing the technology on its capabilities, not what it is sold as.Andrew Genthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06390065525080995888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4702285177962101956.post-35775113637454470932010-06-18T12:48:58.324-04:002010-06-18T12:48:58.324-04:00If companies implemented SharePoint with proper pl...If companies implemented SharePoint with proper planning, support, training, and customization from a SharePoint expert, rather than relying on their IT people to learn SharePoint, do you think SharePoint can be ideal to satisfy those collaborative, knowledge management, doc. management, etc. needs? The Odd Truthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04290353510639273990noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4702285177962101956.post-82367205856117441272009-03-31T06:43:00.000-04:002009-03-31T06:43:00.000-04:00Interesting commentary re SharePoint - the risk th...Interesting commentary re SharePoint - the risk that the mistakes of the past (Lotus) will be made again (Microsoft). In the current climate these risks are exacerbated - companies implementing collaboration, knowledge management, document management on the cheap using SharePoint - without the appropriate planning, support, training - basics of governance.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16169992155899834567noreply@blogger.com
